June 14, 2007 - Boyleston

Game ID 2203
Ref: Luke Dooley
Field: Scar Hill Field Boyleston
Weather: Nice

Lost 5-0

1st Half Lineup
Goalie: Olivia Magnussen (Captain)
Backs: Courtney Mills, Leah Stams
Mids: Michaela Colarossi, Brianna Ganimian
Fronts: Gwen Savino, Avary Don, Emily Schomp

2nd Half Lineup
Goalie: Courtney Mills
Backs: Leah Stams, Vibiana Guzman
Mids: Avary Don, Gwen Savino
Fronts: Michaela Colarossi, Kiran Reed, Emily Schomp

The last game of the season!

Olivia had an excellent game as goalie. Under a lot of pressure from the start, she had some great saves including one in particular where she tipped a hard struck ball over the bar that was perfectly placed for scoring. Courtney as goalie also did a great job with hard goal kicks getting the ball up field quickly.

Leah and Vibiana were solid in defense and Michaela, Gwen and Brianna covered well in the midfield.

I also got an headers from Gwen and Leah (one each).

Boyleston's defense was particularily strong, shutting down attacks by Avary, Emily and Kiran as forwards. Boyleston's offense also seemed very practiced by consistently moving the ball up the wings and passing to a striker in the middle for the shot. Their strategy worked well and they deserved their win.

Good luck to the girls next season and have a great summer!

Coach Craig.

June 2, 2007 - Maynard

Game ID 2232
Ref: Patricia Gately
Field: Rockland 1 Maynard
Weather: Hot

Won 3-2
Stow Scorers: Megan Shenton, Avary Don, Michaela Colarossi

1st Half Lineup
Goalie: Courtney Mills (Captain)
Backs: Vibiana Guzman, Brianna Ganimian
Mids: Michaela Colarossi, Gwen Savino
Fronts: Avary Don, Emily Schomp, Olivia Magnussen

2nd Half Lineup
Goalie: Megan Shenton
Backs: Leah Stams, Michelle Gelberger
Mids: Vibiana Guzman, Olivia Magnussen
Fronts: Gwen Savino, Kiran Reed, Emily Schomp

We won! We were tied at half time, 2-2, with Megan and Avary scoring for Stow, and then Michaela scored the game winning goal in the second half. We also had "close call" shots from Gwen and Emily.

We had one incident call in the first half with the referee blowing the whistle for a penalty, and then with play continuing after the whistle, Maynard scored a goal and the referee allowed the goal instead of playing the penalty. While that was not "the right call" (the defense stopped playing on the whistle), it was still the referee's call to make, and in the end it didn't matter. We need to remember that the referees are there learning the game along with the players too.

Gwen and Vibiana had a particularily good game, each combining position play and hustle, resulting in lots of won balls. The Megan, Leah, Michelle defense did an excellent job in the second half. I also trusted Brianna, Courtney and Olivia as I moved them around different positions.

While Kiran's goal scoring still eludes her, she still plays with teamwork in mind and passes to better opportunities instead of always selfishly trying for her own goals. That is an example I like for the whole team!

Ball control, particularily dribbling past opponents and trapping from high passes, as well as the situational awareness to pass "to someone" (instead of "just up field somewhere") continues to need some work from everyone.

The game also cost me some more money as I'll be paying out $1 per header (seemingly open to player interpretation!) per game to Michaela, Olivia (2), Gwen, Megan, Michelle and Leah. Its a good thing soccer season is over soon, although the team no longer has an issue with doing headers!

Coach Craig.

May 24, 2007 - Fitchburg

Game ID 2228
Ref: Ruben Quiroga
Field: Coolidge Fitchburg
Weather: Hot

Lost 6-0

1st Half Lineup
Goalie: Olivia Magnussen (Captain)
Backs: Leah Stams, Michelle Gelberger
Mids: Vibiana Guzman, Courtney Mills
Fronts: Gwen Savino, Avary Don, Emily Schomp

2nd Half Lineup
Goalie: Courtney Mills
Backs: Brianna Ganimian, Vibiana Guzman
Mids: Olivia Magnussen, Michaela Colarossi
Fronts: Leah Stams, Kiran Reed, Michelle Gelberger

As the game was just about to start, I wasn't sure I was going to be able to field a full team. But, at the last minute, we got one more to make 8 players. Five minutes in, Coach Missy arrived with 3 more for subs after getting lost on the way!

Our goalies were given a workout by a team that showed good teamwork and good ball control. With the sun direct in her eyes, Olivia made a great save and got her hands on a well struck ball that scored. Leah, Vibiana, Michelle and Brianna did great protecting their goalie, in particular, Courtney who also had to face some well struck kicks.

I got more headers from Emily, Michaela, Brianna and Leah. We also had a couple of opportunities to score from Gwen, Emily and Kiran fed from the midfielders Avary, Olivia and Michaela.

Coach Craig.

May 12, 2007 - Hudson

Game ID 2223
Ref: Luke Nesman
Field: Bradley Stow
Weather: Nice

Lost 4-1
Stow Scorers: Emily Schomp

1st Half Lineup
Goalie: Olivia Magnussen (Captain)
Backs: Leah Stams, Michelle Gelberger
Mids: Michaela Colarossi, Gwen Savino
Fronts: Avary Don, Kiran Reed, Emily Schomp

2nd Half Lineup
Goalie: Megan Shenton
Backs: Avary Don, Courtney Mills
Mids: Vibiana Guzman, Olivia Magnussen
Fronts: Michaela Colarossi, Emily Schomp, Kiran Reed

The girls know that I track headers. At the end of the season, I pay $1 per header, from the games we play, which is a motivator for a skill that this team is shy of doing. But, I got headers from both Avary and Kiran!

Megan had a fantastic game, both as a forward and especially as a goalie (you know she is doing good when the opposing coach congratulated her for some great saves)!

Olivia also played well as a goalie and saved a penalty shot! Unfortunately, the Hudson strikers got past our defenses multiple times and in one on one situations, scored two goals each on Olivia and Megan.

While Megan, Emily, Leah and Avary had some great runs and shots on goal, we had a hard time scoring and that really was what lost the game for us.

We didn't play badly but sometimes stuff just goes against you. Brianna and Clare were out dues to colds and several of our other players were sluggish from the same thing. Thats just the way it goes sometimes, so we'll reset and try again next week.

Coach Craig.

May 5, 2007 - Maynard

Game ID 2220
Ref: Luke Benny
Field: Pine Bluffs Stow
Weather: Nice

Won 5-0
Stow Scorers: Avary Don (3), Megan Shenton and Emily Schomp

1st Half Lineup
Goalie: Megan Shenton (Captain)
Backs: Leah Stams, Michelle Gelberger
Mids: Olivia Magnussen, Brianna Ganimian
Fronts: Michaela Colarossi, Avary Don, Gwen Savino

2nd Half Lineup
Goalie: Courtney Mills
Backs: Leah Stams, Michelle Gelberger
Backs: Vibiana Guzman, Olivia Magnussen
Fronts: Megan Shenton, Kiran Reed, Emily Schomp

Substitute: Clare Noone

We won! I think this game provided a lift to the girls, who were starting to think they wouldn't win any. They played hard and they played well. We did have one injury, Clare hurt her foot, but seemed a little better after putting it on ice for a litttle while.

In the front line, Avary was on fire and knocked in three goals, something our shooting game has badly needed! Megan and Emily also got their first goals for the season, with Michaela and Gwen showing real hustle and Kiran showing neat subtlety in her footwork.

Our runners in the middle, Olivia, Brianna and Vibiana generally had to be everywhere and they were. On the defensive side, our goalies Megan and Courtney, didn't let anything get past them, and the Michelle and Leah team did an excellent job shutting down any attacks.

This was the first time we had the whole team show up and I took a team photo! And... Thanks to Michelle for the oranges!

April 28, 2007 - Groton

Game ID 2214
Ref: Luke Benny
Field: Bradley Stow
Weather: Nice

Lost 1-0

1st Half Lineup
Goalie: Courtney Mills (Captain)
Backs: Leah Stams, Michelle Gelberger
Mids: Gwen Savino, Vibiana Guzman
Fronts: Michaela Colarossi, Avary Don, Brianna Ganimian

2nd Half Lineup
Goalie: Megan Shenton
Backs: Courtney Mills, Olivia Magnussen
Mids: Michaela Colarossi, Brianna Ganimian
Fronts: Avary Don, Kiran Reed, Emily Schomp

I really wanted to win this one... Pre-game comments assumed we were going to lose bad. But, the girls focused, worked together and played hard and the other side started to get very worried as the game progressed! I have no complaints at all, they played just how I wanted them to play.

Courtney had a great first showing for goal keeping. Also, none of the girls slacked off during the game and I had particularily hard running from Leah, Brianna, Michaela and Michelle. Gwen and Vibiana gave great coverage on the wings and Avary, Olivia, Megan, Kiran and Emily all took their runs on goal.

Everyone knows that headers get my special recognition and in this game I got them from Olivia and Avary, and I even saw two headers from Leah as well! Excellent!

I know the girls are disappointed with no wins yet, but they are playing well and getting better every game. Its just a matter of time now...

Coach Craig.

April 21, 2007 - Berlin

Game ID 2209
Ref: Michael Hines
Field: 8v8 Berlin
Weather: Nice

Lost 7-1
Stow Scorers: Michaela Colarossi

1st Half Lineup
Goalie: Olivia Magnussen (Captain)
Backs: Clare Noone, Courtney Mills
Mids: Michaela Colarossi, Vibiana Guzman
Fronts: Leah Stams, Emily Schomp, Gwen Savino

2nd Half Lineup
Goalie: Megan Shenton
Backs: Clare Noone, Courtney Mills
Mids: Olivia Magnussen, Vibiana Guzman
Fronts: Gwen Savino, Emily Schomp, Michaela Colarossi

Not sure what happened this game. Clare and Cortney did a great job protecting their goal keepers but quite a few goals got past us in the first half. Olivia got a work out and Megan did well clearing the ball far up field. We held them a lot better the second half but we were looking at a long way to come back from.

Meanwhile our mids did a lot of running. Michaela had a great game and was everywhere backing up folks where they needed it. Vibiana also had some great plays even though the Ref called her on some high kicking.

In the fronts, Michaela scored our only goal while Gwen and Leah pushed forward and both Megan and Emily got a few close shots off.

Next week, we need to practice ball control and harder kicks, both of which the Berlin team showed they were better at than us.

Coach Craig.

April 14, 2007 - Northborough

Game ID 2208
Ref: Olin Lathrop
Field: Bradley, Stow
Weather: Nice

Lost 3-2
Stow Scorers: Avary Don (2)

1st Half Lineup
Goalie: Megan Shenton (Captain)
Backs: Clare Noone, Courtney Mills
Mids: Brianna Ganimian, Avary Don
Fronts: Kiran Reed, Emily Schomp, Gwen Savino

2nd Half Lineup
Goalie: Olivia Magnussen
Backs: Clare Noone, Courtney Mills
Mids: Brianna Ganimian, Gwen Savino
Fronts: Avary Don, Megan Shenton, Kiran Reed

Substitute: Vibiana Guzman

Notice that I didn't say "defense" or "offense" for field positions in the line ups. This season, every position is an "attacker", regardless of where they are on the field!

Last year, I worked hard on getting the girls to add headers to their skill sets. I was very pleased to see that Brianna did two and Olivia did one during the game!

Brianna in particular had a great game, her ability to run hard all the time is why she is invaluable in the mid field where she can help both the "backs" and the "fronts" as needed.

Avary scored two goals turning around a 3-0 game to a final score of 3-2.

Given recent weather conditions and the fact that we have had only one practice, Coach Missy and I felt the team did well in spreading out, playing positions and working together. Northborough is typically one of the hardest teams we face and our team also moved from division C to B this year. I'm pleased with our start!

Coach Craig.
