In 1963, the Post Office Department invented the Zoning Improvement Plan (ZIP) code, a numbering system with separate code numbers kept in a database for all cities in the United States. The ZIP code was designed to assist in speeding sorting and mail delivery. There are currently over 42,000 zip codes in the U.S.
Mr. Zippy, a lovable cartoon ambassador, was created and was largely responsible for the success of United States ZIP code compliance. Mr. Zippy’s theme song was "Zip-a-dee-doo-dah" sung by Ethel Merman. He appeared on several stamps, stamp selvage and post office publicity items from 1964 to 1986. In 1983, the new nine-digit Zip + 4 Code was developed, and the Post Office retired their little ambassador in 1986. Today, there is more than 95% compliance with the ZIP Code program.
